Between Roots & Wings

“We desire to bequest two things to our children—the first one is roots; the other is wings.” — Sudanese Proverb

More than 35 years ago, the Lost Boys arrived in the barren northwest corner of Kenya and planted trees to offer them a shaded spot to escape the oppressively hot desert sun. Perhaps it was a prayer-like offering to their children, providing them roots in a place that was not home.

These photographs are all printed as photogravures. Creating a photogravure involves using a photographic negative to etch an image into a copper or photo polymer plate with light and chemicals, burnishing ink into the play, and then using a press to print the prepared plate onto paper. This process was developed 200 years ago.
